MDC-T President, Morgan Tsvangirai on Thursday said desperate attempts by Zanu PF to push through an election would be vigorously blocked by the MDC and other progressive organisations until a clear roadmap has been set out.
President Tsvangirai was addressing thousands of MDC supporters and villagers on Thursday at the victory celebrations for the Speaker of Parliament and MDC national chairperson, Hon. Lovemore Moyo at Brunapeg in Mangwe district, Matebeleland South province.
The celebrations were to mark the re-election of Hon. Moyo as the Speaker of Parliament.
In Harare, Hon Douglas Mwonzora, the MDC national spokesperson last night said free and fair elections should have the correct atmosphere - a free and accessible national broadcaster; respect of the rule of law; an impartial and professional security sector and absence of intimidation, harassment, violence on the voters; a credible Zimbabwe electoral commission with a credible voters' roll and a democratic constitutional framework.
At a public discussion forum organised by the Mass Public Opinion Institute, MPOI, in Harare yesterday under the topic: "Elections roadmap - hopes and fears", Hon Mwonzora said Zimbabwe must at one point, have free and fair elections to determine who must legitimately run the affairs of the people of Zimbabwe.
He said there is need for a clear roadmap to an election which clearly stipulates the operations of an election before, during and after the elections.
Hon Mwonzora said it is impossible to have elections this year as the people – driven Constitution is yet to be completed. He said the country should then have a clear roadmap with time frames.
However, he said the MDC is ready for a free and fair elections any day, any time as long as it is not in the mould of the sham 27 June 2008 presidential rerun, where Zanu PF unleashed violence on innocent citizens of Zimbabwe.
