There has been a marked decrease in number of accidents and deaths that occurred in Zimbabwe compared to last year since the beginning of the festive season on the 15th of December.
31 people have been killed compared to 52 who were killed last year during the same period, while 138 people have been injured this year compared to 308 last year.
Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said the decrease in the number of accidents can be attributed to awareness campaigns which were conducted by the ZRP and other stakeholders such as the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
Chief Superintendent Nyathi said as a result of the commitment to reducing road carnage, 730 vehicles have been impounded for various offences while 48 880 drivers have been issued with tickets compared to 5094 suspects during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the ZRP has warned public service vehicle drivers against overloading, saying such practises cause accidents.
Most accidents recorded so far have been attributed to human error.
