Civil servants' hopes of ending the year with an agreed salary review for 2014 seem to be fading away following the announcement by the government that it is still carrying out further consultations to award them the promised Poverty Datum Line-based increment.

The workers' representatives, who are part of the negotiating team, expressed different views towards the outcome of the meeting.

The chairperson of the Apex Council, Richard Gundane and the Professional Technical Officers Association Executive Secretary Irene Matare expressed hope that government will still uphold its promise despite the failure to reach a compromise in today's meeting.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Secretary General Raymond Majongwe and Teachers Union of Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer Manuel Nyawo both said civil servants had pinned their hopes on government's promise that salaries would be adjusted before end of year and the failure by Tuesday's meeting to effect the review will erode hopes the thousands of workers had.

According to their position paper, civil servants are proposing that the lowest paid worker's basic salary be reviewed from US$159 to US$317 dollars, while the housing allowance is raised from US$74 to US$160 and transport allowance remains at US$63.
