Man (35) drowns while trying to catch fish

A Chegutu man, 35, drowned in a dam on Monday while casting his fishing nets using an inflated tube as a buoy.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara identified the fisherman as Richard Taruvinga and said the Sub-Aqua Unit was still searching for Taruvinga's body.
It is believed that on Monday at around 7pm, Taruvinga, who was with Parazeni Mashoko (28), went to Cotton Dam to catch fish.
While at the dam, Taruvinga used an inflated tube to help him get to the middle of the dam while Mashoko remained behind.
After an hour, Mashoko lost sight of the light from Taruvinga's torch. He called out, received no reply and on suspecting that there may have been an accident, Mashoko went to Taruvinga's home and alerted his wife of his fears.
In another incident, a 25-year-old miner from Kadoma died on Monday when the mine shaft he was working in collapsed and buried him underground.
Insp Mabgweazara said police were still investigating the death. At around 10pm on December 23, Respect Dzinde was working a shaft at Venif Mine in Battlefields with Paul Hari (27).
The shaft collapsed and trapped Dzinde underground. Hari escaped unhurt and alerted other mine workers who helped him to retrieve Dzinde's dead body.
A report was made at Battlefields Police Station and the body was taken to Kadoma Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. Insp Mabgweazara appealed to mine owners to ensure security and safety measures were put in place and adhered to so as to prevent the loss of life at work.
