A total 86 babies were born on Christmas Day at three Central Hospitals in Harare and Chitungwiza, namely Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Harare Hospital and Chitungwiza Central Hospital.

Nearly all hospitals in and around Harare were today discharging some of the babies born on Christmas Day so that they can spend the rest of Boxing Day at home.

Harare Hospital recorded 42 babies, Parirenyatwa had 29 while Chitungwiza Central had babies.
Parents of the new arrivals were delighted as they considered their children highly favoured by being born on such a day.

Other institutions such as West End Hospital Maternity Ward recorded two births, Belvedere Maternity 11 and Edith Opperman Maternity Home 11.

One baby from Harare Hospital was born eight minutes just after midnight.

The matron on duty at Harare Hospital, Getrude Pedzisai and matron at Edith Opperman Hospital Esnath Nleya said despite the fact that most people will be off duty and will be having a good time as families, they are happy to be working on Christmas holiday to save the nation as their job is a calling.

To a Christian, giving birth on Christmas Day is very significant as it is considered a reminder of the birth of Jesus Christ who is believed to have been born in Bethlehem on the same date.
