Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Obert Mpofu said government will be inviting tenders for the rehabilitation of the country's main highways.
The tenders will be floated in the next few weeks to allow the new contractors to undertake the road rehabilitation exercise in the same manner in which it has been implemented on the Bulawayo-Mutare highway.
Mpofu said the project will include the upgrading of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls, Harare–Chirundu, Harare-Beitbridge, Bulawayo-Tsholotsho and Bulawayo-Nkayi highways.
He added that his ministry has made all the necessary preparations and tenders will be invited in the next few weeks.
"Its current the tenders will be invited soon we have done all the preparations and these will be advertised in a few days if not weeks," he said.
He said the upgrading of the road network is necessary as it will contribute towards the reduction of accidents in the country and enable rural districts to be more accessible.
Although most highways are in a better condition than narrow strips, most of them have not been rehabilitated for years due to lack of funding hence the need for upgrading.
At least US$4 billion is required to rehabilitate the country's road network to make all rural and urban centres more accessible.
