A 23-year-old Masvingo woman has been arrested for scalding her daughter-in-law with boiling water after the latter foiled her alleged attempt to poison some family members.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the arrest on May 21 of Patricia Ruzengwe after she attacked Snodia Dube (17) in Rutenga, Mwenezi district.
Dube is married to Ruzengwe's stepson, Canaisias Hove.
In the morning of May 21, Ruzengwe allegedly prepared food for the whole family before leaving for town.
At around 10am, Dube took the prepared food with the intention of dishing it out to the family. She, however, noticed some black particles in the food which she suspected to be poison.
Dube alerted her husband who instructed her to stop dishing out the food until Ruzengwe returned home.
It is alleged that when Ruzengwe came back, her stepson Canaisias confronted her and accused her of attempting to kill his family, immediately sparking a heated argument.
The accusation did not go down well with Ruzengwe.
Infuriated, she reportedly rushed to the kitchen and took a pot of boiling water from the stove and poured it onto Dube.
Dube sustained burns all over the body and was rushed to Neshuro Hospital in Mwenezi where she is reportedly in critical condition.
The matter was reported to the police that same day, leading to Ruzengwe's arrest.
Ruzengwe is in police custody awaiting trial.
