Zimbabwe Republic Police has attributed the 50% decrease of festive season road accidents deaths to awareness campaigns and their heavy presence on major roads.

Eighty-one people have died so far this year compared to 161 last year.

Police consider December 15 to January 15 to be the festive season.

National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi attributed the 50 percent decline to police presence on highways and awareness campaigns that have made road users more responsible.

"We increased visibility on the highways through roadblocks, blitzes and awareness campaigns prior to the holiday and we believe this has contributed immensely to the reduction in the number of lives lost during this festive season compared to the same period in 2012," Chief Supt Nyathi said.

He said the number of accidents recorded dropped from 1 008 recorded in 2012 to 908 recorded so far this year.
