School wear manufacturers, retailers clash
04 Jan 2014 at 17:57hrs | Views
A battle for territory and customers between a renowned school wear manufacturer and emerging indigenous retailers in Harare has turned ugly ahead of schools opening.
Less than a fortnight before schools open on the 14th of January, competition to sell has turned ugly for some suppliers in Harare.
Some indigenous manufacturers plying their trade in Harare's Leopold Takawira Street accuse a renowned school wear manufacturer which has been operating for five decades, Enbee Stores, of elbowing them out and working in cahoots with the police to stifle their operations.
These allegations are refuted by Enbee Stores which counter accuses the indigenous entrepreneurs of being vendors who disturb their operations by snatching customers from their premises.
Customers concerns, however, seem to be entirely on purchasing school uniforms and other related requirements at affordable rates.
ZRP Harare province spokesperson Inspector Tedious Chibanda, however, said police cannot be hired by individuals, but acting to ensure sanity by preventing illegal vending.
As the clock ticks towards the opening of the 2014 school first term, one hopes the hostilities among uniform suppliers will not escalate.
