A NEW statue of the late Father Zimbabwe and Vice-President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo will go up in the capital later this year, following a similar honour in Bulawayo, officials said.
The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) says it has already identified the site for the statue.
"Work is in progress to erect Dr Nkomo's statue in Harare and it's our intention to do it very early this year but that is dependent on many variables," said the NMMZ director Dr Godfrey Mahachi.
"We're certain that the statue will be erected before the end of the year. The site for the statue is already there but once we are ready we will let you know."
Jabulani Nkomo, of the Joshua Nkomo National Foundation, confirmed consultations were ongoing on the project but declined to comment further.
Dr Nkomo's statue was initially set for mounting at Karigamombe Building in Harare but there were reservations over the site until the issue spilled to High Court, which passed a judgment stopping the erection of the statue at the place.
