A 29-year-old chicken thief drowned in Mukuvisi River after he was chased by a security guard while attempting to steal from Zaoga Church in Glen View on New Year's Day.
Sam Mesa (29) was with an alleged accomplice identified as Fungai Katsala when the incident occurred at around 3.30am.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda said; "The two went to the Church in Glen View 7 in an attempt to steal chickens. At the church there was a security guard who then confronted them and they ran away."
He said the two tried to flee by going across Mukuvisi River. The chasing security guard gave up the chase when they entered the river and he returned to the church.
However, Mesa drowned while Katsala escaped and is still at large.
Last Friday at around 8am, Mesa's body was found on the river bank and a police report was made. His body was taken to Harare Central Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, a gardener drowned in a deep well while working at Glaudina Farm in Dzivarasekwa last Fiday.
Insp Chibanda said the body of Never Kunzwana (34) was found by his employer when he did not show up for lunch.
The police spokesperson said cases of drowning characterised the rainy season and people should be careful around water bodies, with particular attention being paid on children.
Last Monday, three children drowned while swimming in Mushawiri Dam in Gutu.
