Chirenda declared a national hero

The late veteran nationalist, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Herald Chirenda, who died on the 1st of this month, has been declared a national hero and will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Thursday.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Chirenda was declared a national hero after deliberations by the Zanu PF Politburo in Harare on Tuesday.
The Politburo took the decision after considering submissions by the Zanu PF Bulawayo province.
Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Rugare Gumbo told the ZBC that the late Chirenda, a former senior Zimbabwe National Army officer and ZIPRA Commander, was part of the first group of cadres from ZAPU’s Department of Special Affairs military wings who did basic military training in Algeria from 1964 to 1965.
Gumbo described the late Chirenda as a selfless and dedicated cadre who sacrificed his life for the emancipation of Zimbabweans.
During the struggle, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Chirenda, whose Chimurenga name was Elliot Masengo, was deployed to Morogoro Camp in Tanzania as an instructor, together with Brigadier General Ambrose Mutinhiri, the late Alfred Nikita Mangena and Tapson Sibanda.
In 1978, he was appointed ZAPU party representative to Romania where he remained until independence in 1980.
Retired Lieutenant Colonel Chirenda was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army in 1981 and served until his retirement in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, nine children and 18 grandchildren.
