A NYANYADZI service station last Sunday fell prey to unknown thieves who made good their escape with more than 600 litres of diesel.

The fuel attendant at Goney service-station in Nyanyadzi, only identified as Baba Munashe, confirmed the incident that took place at around 2am last Sunday at the service station.

He said he came to work on Sunday morning and noted one of the diesel-pump lockers broken.

"There were large marks of diesel spilled around the diesel pump. I suspected someone must have tampered with the pump in my absence. There was neither a security guard nor security light at the filling station," he said.

When he took a dip stick to measure the quantity of diesel in the tank, he realised that it was less by more than 600 litres.

He said he notified some of his workmates about the incident and made observations around the area.

Drops of fuel were seen crossing Mutare-Birchenough highway from the filling station.

A few metres away there was a bucket half filled with diesel under a mango tree close to the pump.

At the same point there were also large marks of diesel and car tyres.

One unidentified bar tender at the complex said she heard dogs barking in the middle of the night.

"The way the dogs were barking that night was so unusual and I never thought there might be thieves so I went ahead with my sleep," she said.

A police report was made and investigations are still under way.
