A KWEKWE man from Mbizo suburb, Thembinkosi Gumbi, appeared in court Thursday facing a murder charge after he allegedly fatally assaulted his wife on New Year's Eve accusing her of receiving a Whatsapp message accompanied by images of male private parts.
Gumbi, who had initially pleaded guilty to charges of assault under the Domestic Violence Act, had his charge changed to murder after his wife Nyarai Moyo (28) succumbed to the assault injuries on January 5 this year.
The State alleges that on December 31 last year, Gumbi and his now deceased wife were at home when she received a Whatsapp image from an undisclosed friend.
Gumbi said he was angered when he saw the image which he alleged showed male private parts being sent from a number he suspected to be his wife's male friend and started assaulting her.
The woman allegedly dashed out of the house and locked herself inside the couple's car, but Gumbi smashed the windscreen with a disused shock absorber. He continued assaulting her all over until she collapsed.
"The now deceased suffered a cracked skull bone, lacerations on the forehead and injuries all over the body (sic) and could not talk when she was taken to hospital due to the assault," read part of the State outline. She was assisted by a neighbour who carried her to the police station. Gumbi was remanded in custody to January 20.
