A Chitungwiza woman's bid to secure a protection order against her abusive partner backfired last week after the man accused her of being the real nuisance, saying she often refuses to eat sadza and green vegetables, preferring meat.

Malvin Chidavanyika drew hearty laughter from the Chitungwiza Magistrates' Court public gallery after claiming he only got to know about his partner Lawrencia Muneri's pregnancy in the court.

He also claimed she shunned performing household chores.

". . . yet I cannot afford to buy meat every day," said Chidavanyika, drawing laughter from the gallery.

It is understood Chidavanyika and Muneri have been co-habiting for a while. The relationship, however, soured after the former allegedly became abusive. Muneri then sought a protection order citing physical, verbal and emotional abuse.

Appearing before magistrate Ms Nomsa Sabarauta, Muneri alleged Chidavanyika assaulted her regularly, denied her access to food and chased her away from the "matrimonial home" despite her being pregnant.

In turn, Chidavanyika denied the allegations, saying Muneri was the nuisance who demanded more than he could afford. He told the court that he sent her away after efforts by relatives to resolve their differences proved futile.

Asked by Ms Sabarauta whether they were married, Chidavanyika quickly said, "Ari kuchaya mapoto" (she is co-habiting)."

Muneri, on the other hand, claimed they were married although it was proved that no bride price went out to her parents.

Ms Sabarauta granted the order and also ruled that Muneri could not force Chidavanyika to stay with her since they had been co-habiting.

She advised her to consult the law for the upkeep of the unborn child. Ms Sabarauta also advised Chidavanyika to seek a protection order against Muneri's relatives whom he accused of assaulting him.
