Two Zimbabwe Republic Police constables have been fined $100 after a Harare magistrate found them guilty of extorting $10 from a fuel coupon vendor.
Harare magistrate Margaret Ushamba sentenced Justice Maringapasi, 30, and Tawanda Ganda, 35, to a three-month wholly suspended jail term on condition of five years of good behaviour.
They were also fined $100 fine or 30 days imprisonment.
Maringapasi and Ganda of 5794 Street Kuwadzana 7 and 8586 Kuwadzana 3 respectively were found guilty of extortion.
Prosecutor Chrispen Chikafu proved that on October 16 last year at corner Kwame Nkrumah and Sixth Street, Maringapasi who is based at Mabvuku Police Station approached Stanford Mafusire and told him that he was under arrest for selling coupons.
Maringapasi got into Mafusire's vehicle and ordered him to drive towards Harare Central Police Station.
Mafusire complied and drove the vehicle under Maringapasi's instructions.
Muringapasi ordered Mafusire to park his car when they arrived at Corner Robson Manyika and Angwa Street.
Immediately, two other people introduced as police sergeants entered the vehicle and Mafusire pleaded with the officers to forgive him.
They proceeded to Kenneth Kaunda Street opposite National Railways of Zimbabwe where Maringapasi and Ganda demanded a bribe from Mafusire.
He told the details he only had $10.
When Muringapasi and Ganda demanded more money, Mafusire locked the vehicle doors and drove back to Harare Central Police Station where the two cops were arrested.
