A Mutorashanga man has denied signing a marriage certificate produced in court by his wife.

Cephas Muzoreva accused his wife, Elinate Mahengeni of acquiring a fraudulent Chapter 5:11 marriage certificate.

This emerged after Muzoreva hauled Mahengeni before the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order.

He told magistrate Tafadzwa Muvhami that Mahengeni assaults him regularly over a dispute about a house in Budiriro, Harare.

"This woman is assaulting me over a house in Budiriro which she claims to be hers. She is not allowing me and the children to go to that house," Muzoreva said.

Asked by the magistrate why he was saying "this woman" to his wife, Muzoreva said he was not married to Mahengeni but they had children together.

Mahengeni refuted Muzoreva's allegations and produced a marriage certificate which shows that the two were legally married.

She told the court that Muzoreva ran away from her 12 years ago.

"I am tired of being embarrassed by this man. He ran away 12 years ago and left me with the children because I cannot read and write," said Mahengeni, adding they were married at the Harare Magistrates' Court in 1990.

"I do not assault him because I last saw him 12 years ago so I do not know where I am assaulting him," she said.

Muzoreva argued that the signature on the marriage certificate was not his and insisted that he be granted a protection order.

Magistrate Muvhami told the two that there was a marriage certificate between them which Muzoreva is disputing before ordering Mahengeni to stop assaulting her husband.

He also ordered Mahengeni to stop barring Muzoreva from their matrimonial house in Budiriro.
