A 68-year-old Nyanga man was slapped with a six-month jail term after he pleaded guilty to cultivating 33 plants of mbanje that were found in his garden.

Nyanga provincial magistrate Mr Ignatio Mhene convicted Simon Peter Munganda (68) of Dirorimwe Village under Chief Saunyama on his own plea of guilty.

Public prosecutor Mr Zivanai Gombarume told the court that Munganda was growing the plants in his garden.

"On January 15, police received information to the effect that the accused was cultivating mbanje in his garden along Mapako River. On January 16, police detectives acted on the tip-off and upon arrival they managed to locate the accused person who then led them to his garden.

"When they arrived at the garden the detectives found 33 plants of mbanje measuring about 1,5 metres each," he said.

Mr Mhene slapped Munganda with a 12-month jail term, but, however, set aside six months of the sentence on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
