A self-confessed Harare prostitute has been jailed for six months after assaulting a man who had ditched her for another hooker.
Despite pleading not guilty to assault charges, Blessing Chaka (23) of Marlborough East was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo ruled that the State had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Chaka is said to have assaulted the man with an empty beer bottle.
Initially, Mr Murendo slapped Chaka with a 10-month jail term but suspended four of them on condition of good behaviour over the next five years. Prosecutor Ms Rumbidzai Mushonga told the court that on January 19 this year, Lovemore Karanyika (34) of St Mary's was drinking beer with Chaka at Paramount night club in Chitungwiza.

The two are said to have struck a deal to be intimate later that night. However, things turned sour when Karanyika shifted his attention from Chaka to her friend, who is also believed to be a prostitute. An irate Chaka is said to have charged towards Karanyika and hit him with an empty beer bottle on the head as she demanded to know why he had had a sudden change of heart. Medical reports show that Karanyika sustained a deep cut on the head as a result of the attack. In passing the sentence, Mr Murendo considered that cases of women perpetrating violence are on the increase. "Courts are always lenient with female first offenders and it appears as if they are now taking advantage of that. There is need to pass deterrent sentences to send a clear message to the society at large," he said.
Chaka looked shocked as officers from the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services led her away from the courtroom.
