THE MDC-T spokesperson and lawyer Douglas Mwonzora who was facing fraud charge involving misappropriation of trust funds has been acquitted.
Mwonzora, who was brought to court on summons, allegedly misappropriated money his client had won in a lawsuit after a botched car deal. The State claims that the former legislator used ZW$300 000 which his client Lameck Kunjaku obtained after he sued one R Masuku, who had sold him a stolen Mazda 626 vehicle in 1999.
Mwonzora advised his facebook followers that the Magistrate found him not guilty and acquitted him at the close of the State's case.
"This afternoon the Regional Magistrate's Court in Harare found me not guilty and acquitted me at the close of the State case in the matter where I was being accused of theft of trust property. The Magistrate found out that I had been wrongly accused yet the evidence in court showed that I had been above board in my dealings. There is no doubt that these charges were political machinations meant to soil my professional and political image. It was also meant to soil the image of the MDC.
"I am extremely grateful at the professional competency of my defence team of Advocate Matinenga and Mr. Trust Maanda. I am also grateful for the support I got from all my friends and comrades in the struggle.
"I am grateful at the support that my wife, children and family gave me during these trying times. We must never allow setbacks such as these to deter us from pursuing our principal political goal of achieving freedom, justice and equality in Zimbabwe.
"That the Magistrate discharged me at the close of the State case shows that the concocted case against me was ill-contrived by the enemies of democracy in Zimbabwe.
"I can now concentrate on both my political and professional work as a lawyer and an academic. I know that with unity of purpose we will win over governmental power through peaceful, constitutional and democratic means. Victory is Certain."
