A Hurungwe headman and three of his aides were arrested last week after they fatally assaulted a local villager in the name of disciplinary action.
Ephraim Katemanyoka, also known as Headman Matau (43), Sekai Kapika (42), Nobert Marapuza (38) and Christopher Nyakashumba (21) have
since appeared before Karoi magistrate Mrs Nyaradzo Ringisayi who advised them to apply for bail at the High Court. Charges against the four arose on the night of January 27 this year. It is alleged Kapika, who had a long-standing affair with one Tendai Nhau, refused to let Nhau into her bedroom that night, claiming she was free to take in anyone else as he had not paid the bride price to her parents. It is alleged Nhau became angry and threatened to burn down a tobacco barn he had built at the homestead. Kapika allegedly ran away and resurfaced moments later in the company of Marapuza and Nyakashumba. The three assaulted Nhau and force-marched him to the headman's home.
The headman allegedly ordered his aides to tie Nhau to a pole overnight. He was released only the following morning and died two days later.
