A soldier shot his former lover and seriously injured her before fatally shooting himself with the same pistol at Goromonzi Primary School last week.National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
He identified the deceased as Sergeant Martin Bhunu, who was stationed at 2 Brigade in Harare, and the woman as Ressy Munhenga (40).
He said the pistol used in the commission of the offence had been recovered and that investigations were progressing.
It is alleged that on February 11 at around 7pm, Bhunu approached Munhenga at Goromonzi Primary School and tried to reconcile with her with no success.
A misunderstanding ensued and Bhunu drew a pistol and shot Munhenga, before shooting himself with the same gun through the mouth. Munhenga was injured while Bhunu died.
The woman was admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital where she is recovering. Last month, a 33-year-old security guard stationed at Mavhudzi High School in Nyazura fatally shot his workmate for allegedly having an affair with his lover.
He also accidentally shot a female worker at the school while aiming for his lover. Chief Supt Nyathi appealed to the public to resolve differences peacefully without resorting to taking the law into their own hands.
