Bread shortages loom in the country as grain shortages begin to bite.

Bakery officials have told state media that six of the country's main bakeries will drastically reduce production and could face closure.

The shortages are being blamed on inadequate flour supplies and out-of-date machinery at most bakeries.

Top officials from the National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe said part of the problem is the artificially low prices they are forced to sell bread at.

Some employees have not been paid for up to five months and up to six major bakeries face closure.
