A 65-YEAR-OLD Zimunya woman, Naume Makeyo from Village 8A in Himalaya was on Tuesday lucky to escape a jail term after she was convicted of possessing dangerous drugs.
Mkeyo was convicted on her own plea of guilty to possessing 40 plants of dagga when she appeared before Mutare magistrate Noah Gwatidzo.
But the court sentenced her to a wholly-suspended five-year jail term on account of her advanced age.
Circumstances into the matter were that on February 15 this year, police detectives received a tip off that Makeyo had a field with several plants of dagga.
When police raided her home, they recovered 40 plants of dagga whose value was, however, not disclosed in court.
In mitigation, the frail-looking Makeyo pleaded for leniency, saying poverty had driven her to engage in the illicit practice.
