A Hurungwe man will perform 70 hours of community service after a Karoi magistrate convicted him of having sex with a neighbour's goat last week.

The 19-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to bestiality, appeared happy with the sentence despite being jeered at by crowds outside the courtroom.

According to the Sunday Mail, Magistrate Mr Obedience Matare initially sentenced Clayton Phiri to two-month imprisonment, but later set aside the sentence on condition he performs community service at Mlichi Primary School, starting last Friday.

Mr Matare also ordered Phiri to surrender his birth certificate to the clerk of court until the completion of the sentence.

The court heard that on the morning of February 17 this year, Mr Phillip Marumahoko of Village 9 in Chikuti tethered his three goats to a tree in his yard and went away to perform other household duties.

Mr Marumahoko suddenly heard the goats bleating in an unusual manner, forcing him to rush to the scene.

He got the shock of his life when he found Phiri, who was semi-undressed, having sex with one of the goats as the other two struggled to break free.

Phiri quickly took to his heels, but could not outpace Mr Marumahoko.

Mr Marumahoko apprehended and later took Phiri to the police with the help of other villagers.

Mr Webster Dimingo prosecuted.
