Tendai Biti's house bombed
25 Feb 2014 at 19:32hrs | Views
Tendai Biti's home was petrol bombed early this morning with the MDC-T Secretary General and his family said to be inside.
Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) were at the scene investigating today.
Unconfirmed reports say a white Isuzu double cab truck suspected to have been used by the attackers was caught on CCTV. Safeguard Security company guards and police are said to be in possession of the vehicle's registration details.
Biti was harassed by party youths following an emotive meeting of the MDC-T's 210 districts chairpersons a week ago on the same day violent activists beat-up party deputy treasurer general Elton Mangoma and youth secretary general Promise Mkwananzi.
In June 2011, less than 10 hours after confronting President Robert Mugabe in a cabinet meeting, over what he felt were his unwarranted attacks, unidentified men threw an explosive device at the durawall of Biti's house in the Grange suburb of Harare.
An insider said Biti and the group going the name "renewal team" agitating for Tsvangirai's removal have been labelled Zanu-PF and accused of causing the arrests of activists fingered in the heinous attack on Mangoma. The former Energy Minister has also claimed Tsvangirai was behind his attack.
The latest petrol bomb comes conveniently when tensions in the MDC-T are high over an alleged plot to oust party president Morgan Tsvangirai.
Treasurer General Roy Bennett, his deputy Elton Mangoma and former Organising Secretary Elias Madzuri have led calls for Tsvangirai to step down.
Biti is thought to be the intended beneficiary of those pushing the leadership renewal agenda.
More details to follow.
