A petrol bomb hit the home of top Zimbabwe opposition official and former finance minister Tendai Biti on Tuesday, a party spokesperson said, the second such attack in three years.
"Our secretary general, Tendai Biti told us that his house was attacked early this morning," Douglas Mwonzora, of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), told AFP, adding the explosion did not injure anyone.
Mwonzora said the petrol bomb hit the security wall of the Harare house and was probably the work of long ruling President Robert Mugabe and his party.
"The attack bears the fingerprints of Zanu-PF," he said.
Police could not comment.
Biti, a lawyer and firebrand critic of Mugabe's economic policies is a powerful official in the MDC.
But he has frequently clashed with the party's leadership.
Mwonzora dismissed suggestions the attack could have been prompted by an internal party dispute over Morgan Tsvangirai's leadership.
"It is clear that this is the work of the enemies of the MDC who want to portray it as a violent party," said
Last month MDC deputy treasurer, Elton Mangoma was beaten by party youths outside the party's Harvest House headquarters days after he wrote a letter to Tsvangirai advising him to step down.
A MDC youth leader was arrested by police over the weekend charged with the beating.
Mwonzora said, "Zanu-PF and Mugabe have now sought to capitalise on the disturbances that happened outside Harvest House on Saturday to try to portray the MDC-T as a violent party while at the same time portraying the Zanu-PF as a peace loving party. MDC does not condone violence at all.
"However the violence by Zanu-PF throughout history is there for all to see. The violence perpetrated by Zanu-PF on its own members in Mozambique is there for all to see. The violence perpetrated by Zanu-PF on PF-Zapu during Gukurahundi is still fresh in the minds of the people of Matabeleland.
"In 2008 over 300 MDC supporters were murdered in cold blood by Zanu-PF. we are therefore surprised when Mugabe, who was leader of Zanu-PF during its most murderous moments talks as if his party is a saint. The MDC has now appointed a committee to fully investigate what happened at Harvest House with a view to establish the truth. Once this has been established it will be made public. It will be wrong for people to be presumptuous about this matter because the truth may turn out to be truly shocking."
