Fear has gripped Mpimbila villagers in the Madlambuzi are of Matabeleland South after the discovery of a human skull filled with fresh blood in a cave recently.

A villager identified as Never Moyo allegedly confessed to police that he had been using the skull for witchcraft. A boy from the village who was hunting on 15 February reportedly stumbled upon Moyo's grisly secret.

The boy told village elders his tale. Scared villagers then approached Chief Madlambuzi who dispatched elders to the scene to investigate.

In an interview, Chief Madlambuzi said the skull was hidden near Moyo's homestead, so he was the first person to be questioned.

"At first he said he did not know anything but his younger brother said he had often seen him going to the cave. He then changed his story and said he got the skull from a dead body that he discovered near his homestead soon after independence in 1980," said Chief Madlambuzi.

He said everyone in the village had been shaken by the discovery adding that village elders would soon discuss the issue. One of Moyo's relatives however told the newscrew that the skull belonged to a rival suitor.

"The man was also after Moyo's current wife. This is a closely guarded secret so do not reveal my identity," said the relative.

A traditional healer in the area said a cleansing ceremony has to be carried out otherwise mysterious and horrid deaths would soon plague the village.

"I last saw such witchcraft in Malawi in the 1970s. It is bad magic that demands regular blood sacrifices to be kept under control. Now that the owner has been taken by the police, there would be no one to feed the creatures of the skull. Soon they will invade the village to feed on their own. No one would be safe," said Khulu Sibanda.
