Transport and Infrastructural Development minister Obert Mpofu says measures have been taken to ensure that the country's aircrafts are fully insured.
Air Zimbabwe chief executive officer from 2007 to December 2010 Peter Chikumba, suspended ceo Innocent Mavhunga and company secretary Grace Nyaradzo Pfumbidzayi were arrested this month in connection with an insurance scam at the national airline that prejudiced it of more than US$10 million.
Mpofu was responding to questions from legislators at the National Assembly on what policy government had put in place regarding the insurance cover for passengers who use Air Zimbabwe in view of the fact that there were questions regarding the current insurance cover
"I want to thank the hon. member for raising the issue which is of great concern to the nation regarding the operations of Air Zimbabwe. Some of the issues that he wanted me to address revolve around those that are before the courts. I may not comment on those," Mpofu said.
"On what is being done to safeguard the lives of those that are using Air Zimbabwe, I want to assure this august House that measures have been taken and all our aircrafts that are operating now are fully insured."
Mpofu said there should not be any fear from our colleagues about the lack of insurance.
"The aircrafts are insured and we are taking strict measures to ensure this is done. In fact, this is a requirement by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that aircrafts should be insured," Mpofu said.
