A 35-year-old man from Nyandoro Village in Nyanga heavily assaulted his stepmother with fists and later hacked his father to death with a shovel following a misunderstanding over isitshala, a High Court judge has heard.
Mishoni Musangadzi (35) of Nyandoro Village under Chief Katerere appeared before Justice Charles Hungwe on Wednesday at the Mutare Magistrates' Courts facing murder charges.
He pleaded not guilty.
It was the State's case led by area public prosecutor Ms Jane-Rose Matsikidze that Musangadzi attacked his father, Kondo, with a shovel on the forehead and chest on September 15, 2012.
"On the fateful day, the family had just finished conducting an unveiling of the tombstone ceremony for the late John Musangadzi. Later in the evening the accused approached his stepmother, Joyce Nyamurondo, demanding sadza and meat. After he was told that there was nothing for him he became violent and attacked her with fists. He hit her twice on the head.
"Upon hearing the noise his father tried to intervene and stop the dispute. This was not to be for the accused took a shovel and hit the deceased twice on the forehead and the chest. The deceased fell to the ground and became unconscious. After committing the offence the accused ran away leaving the weapon. Fellow villagers conducted first aid and later took him to the nearest clinic. The deceased was later transferred to Mutare Provincial Hospital where he died on September 22, 2012. Post-mortem results done by Dr Kasongo showed that the deceased had died due to injuries sustained during the attack," she said.
The State will call several witnesses to build its case.
Musangadzi, who is being represented by Mrs Nyamwanza, is denying the charges.
The defence counsel told the court that her client had no intention to kill his father.
She said, indeed, there was misunderstanding over isitshwala and an argument followed. During the argument the deceased slapped her client resulting in him retaliating and pushing his father to the ground. The trial continues.
