A cheeky thief was arrested at Granville Cemetery in Harare on Friday after he was caught stealing tombstones.
The suspected thief, Dennis Shamu was caught by Granville Cemetery maintenance workers in the process of removing a tombstone from a grave.
His accomplice who was waiting in a car quickly sped away upon realising the plan had gone up in smoke.
Ms Charlene Mitton whose late mother's grave had been tampered with expressed shock at the man's lack of conscience and said justice should be done.
Even though caught with his tools of trade and despite witnesses incriminating him, the suspect still pleaded innocent claiming he wanted to take measurements to construct tombstones.
It is believed the stolen tombstones are recycled and sold to unsuspecting customers.
The Harare City Council Department of Housing and Community Services says authorities are putting in measures to curb the vice.
