A 32-year-old man who demanded US$30 000 from a Harare Central Hospital medical doctor who had an affair with his wife has appeared in court charged with extortion.

Norman Ngoni Samanga of Lochinvar in the capital, subsequently confiscated Dr Osmond Mupfiga's vehicle and US$200 as payment towards the adultery fee.

It is alleged that sometime in October last year Mupfiga entered into a relationship with Samanga's wife.

Samanga got wind of the relationship in December of the same year and went to Harare Central Hospital where he confronted Mupfiga who was driving his BMW 321i registration numbers ACS 1980.

It is alleged that Samanga showed Mupfiga a marriage certificate and threatened to cause a scene at the hospital if the doctor did not give him details about the intimate moments he had with his wife.

Samanga also took a photograph of Mupfiga which he threatened to give to H-Metro to shame the doctor, the court heard.

He also allegedly led Mupfiga to his car where his sister and mother-in-law were and produced a firearm.

Samanga claimed that he was a powerful cop who worked at the Police General Headquarters.

He claimed to be related to Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Samanga allegedly drove the doctor to his and his wife's relatives forcing him to confess his sins.

It is alleged Samanga forced Mupfiga to sign an affidavit at the Harare Civil Court confessing the affair and pledging to pay US$30 000 as admission of guilt.

The doctor was also forced to sign documents giving Samanga his maroon BMW valued at US$5000 as part payment.

The remaining US$25 000 was to be paid in monthly instalments of US$200.

Samanga collected the registration book, vehicle keys and proceeded to Bindura where he forced the doctor to confess to his wife.

The doctor reported the matter to the police on February 24 leading to Samanga's arrest.

The vehicle that was sold for US$6 000 was recovered.
