The Chinese government has availed half a million dollars in cash as assistance for families who have been displaced by floods in the Tokwe-Mukosi basin in Masvingo.
The $500 000 was presented to Vice President Joice Mujuru by the visiting Chinese Foreign Policy Advisory Committee delegation which is in the country for a two-day visit.
Head of the four member delegation, who is President of the Association of Former Diplomats of China, Mr Ji Peiding told the ZBC News after paying a courtesy call on Vice President Mujuru that he is conveying the Tokwe-Mukosi assistance on behalf of his country's president.
"It is a home coming visit as I was once an ambassador for 5 years in Zimbabwe in the 1980s. After hearing of the floods in Zimbabwe, the Chinese government has donated $500 000 to show solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe," he said.
Vice President Mujuru commended the Chinese government for the assistance to the families displaced by the Tokwe-Mukosi dam but said more assistance is still needed in the form of tents and food.
"The government of Zimbabwe is grateful of the gesture by the Chinese government though I would like to point out that more is still required," she said.
The Chinese Foreign Policy Advisory Committee will leave Zimbabwe for Namibia on Wednesday.
Over 2514 families have been prematurely displaced by the Tokwe-Mukosi dam after water levels reached dangerous levels.
781 of the families have been relocated and the remainder have been moved to higher ground and are living in temporary shelters.
