Seven people died on the spot when a car veered off the road and hit them as they were attending to their broken-down vehicle near Shangani Business Centre on Friday evening.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident but would not reveal the names of the deceased as their next of kin are yet to be informed.

She disclosed that the accident occurred near the 370 kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo road.

"Circumstances are that, a Nissan Sunny and a Mazda B1800 were towing each other en route to Gweru when the drivers stopped and parked on the side of the road to fix the tow bar," said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

"A Toyota Gaia, which was travelling on the same road, suddenly veered off the road to the left side, approaching the parked vehicles.

"The Toyota Gaia hit all the seven people who were attending to the broken down tow bar. They all died on the spot."  Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged drivers to exercise caution while travelling on the road and to avoid travelling long distances at night.

Last month, five police officers died on the spot, while 11 other people were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in overturned near Vungu River along the Harare-Bulawayo highway near the 27km peg.

The Toyota Hiace which had 16 passengers on board was heading for Harare.
