In a press statements MDC-T said it has learnt with great shock and sadness the untimely death of Mr Edgar Tekere, a veteran nationalist and fearless fighter for the independence and democracy in Zimbabwe.
Mr Tekere who died today in Mutare after a long battle with cancer, was a selfless cadre and revolutionary. His contribution to the fight for freedom and democracy in Zimbabwe both before and after independence is undeniable. The struggle icon contributed immensely to the liberation of Zimbabwe and this remains indelibly imprinted in the annals of Zimbabwe's history.
Zimbabweans will remember Mr Tekere as a leader who left Zanu PF and government soon after the country attained independence due to his disillusionment and the betrayal of the ideals of the liberation struggle. He could not tolerate massive corruption, looting of natural resources and harassment, persecution and murder of political opponents by the establishment.
He found this deplorable and an affront to the national values, esteem and dignity of the people of Zimbabwe. Mr Tekere sacrificed personal comfort to form the Zimbabwe Unity Movement. This party effectively thwarted Zanu PF and Robert Mugabe's vile efforts to establish a one party state dictatorship in Zimbabwe.
We demand that Mr Tekere receives due recognition as a gallant liberator of the people of Zimbabwe both before and after independence.
