THE Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai has appointed deputy secretary general Tapiwa Mashakada as acting treasurer following the suspension of Elton Mangoma on allegations of bribery, factionalism and bringing the party into disrepute.
Douglas Mwonzora, the party's spokesperson, said Tuesday that the party's national standing committee had met and resolved to appoint Mashakada.
"We have appointed Hon Mashakada to the position of acting treasurer general until the disciplinary issue involving Mangoma is resolved," said Mwonzora.
"The national standing committee has also appointed the three member panel that will hear Mangoma's case. I must say he will be afforded all the space available to defend himself. The names will be announced soon."
Mangoma was last week suspended pending a disciplinary hearing as the fall-out over the leadership wrangle threatened to tear the opposition party apart.
The suspension was declared illegal by party secretary general Tendai Biti who is now reportedly under threat of suspension as well.
Former Energy Minister Mangoma has been at the centre of a leadership storm following a series of letters to party president Morgan Tsvangirai demanding that the veteran trade unionist steps down and make way for an elective congress.
In the ensuing disagreements Mangoma, Biti and youth assembly secretary general Promise Mkwananzi were violently attacked by pro-Tsvangirai youths outside the party's Harare head office.
