A WEEKEND outing by two Harare couples ended tragically last Saturday when two male members of the team drowned at the Chinhoyi Caves' swimming pool.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the tragedy and identified the deceased as Allan Murungu (26) and Tamirai Machiweni (27), both from Waterfalls, Harare.
It is alleged that the pair, who according to witnesses appeared drunk, dived into the pool to cool themselves while their wives remained outside.
When Machiweni realised that his colleague was experiencing swimming problems, he allegedly dashed to where he was in a bid to rescue him, but they both drowned.
Their bodies were later retrieved by a passerby only identified as Machando from Karoi who took them to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary.
Murungu, who married in August last year, left a seven-month pregnant wife Liliosa while Machiweni left 23-year-old wife Leticia, whom he wedded last December.
Murungu was buried in Rusape on Monday while Machiweni was buried at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare on Tuesday.
