A callous intruder last Saturday sneaked into a nonagenarian (92)'s house and raped her twice as punishment for failing to surrender $10, which he claimed to be in her possession.
Police confirmed the rape and said a manhunt had been launched for the suspect, believed to be in his 20s.
Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the incident happened at around midnight at Mbiriri Village under Chief Tandi's area of Rusape.
The granny was sleeping alone in her bedroom as her two grandchildren had gone to visit their mother who was not feeling well in Nyazura.
Asst Insp Chananda said the nonagenarian woke up in the middle of the night after some disturbances, only to discover a young man standing at the edge of her bed.
"The intruder ordered her to keep quiet and surrender all the money she had in her possession," said Asst Insp Chananda.
The suspect told the old woman that he knew that she had $10, which she had been given by her grandchildren and should surrender it to him.
He ransacked the room but could not find any money.
"The woman told him that there was neither money nor groceries in the house.
"The intruder then told her that he wanted to rape her as punishment for refusing to give him the US$10," said Asst Insp Chananda.
He allegedly grabbed the woman, removed all her clothes and gagged her with her a handkerchief.
He raped the woman twice and disappeared after threatening her with death if she divulged the issue to anyone.
She later informed her neighbours and a police report was made.
"We are appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect, who is still at large.
"Anyone with information should contact their nearest police station.
"At the same time, we are reminding members of the public not to leave old people alone to avoid cases like these," said Asst Insp Chananda
