A 32-year-old Marondera man who raped and infected his eight-year-old stepdaughter with HIV was on Tuesday slapped with a 20-year jail term by Magistrate Clever Tsikwa who found him guilty of the charges.

The man, whose name cannot be revealed to protect the identity of the minor, pleaded not guilty to the charges, but was nailed due to overwhelming evidence.

He will, however, serve an effective 18-year jail term after two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

According to court papers, on March 13 this year, and at around 0600hrs, the accused and his wife  (who is the mother of the complainant) left the house going to work at a farm, leaving the complainant with her two brothers aged two and five.

At around midday, the accused returned home from work and prepared food for the children
while the mother remained at the farm.

The accused then told the two brothers to go and play outside before ordering the complainant to go and clean his bedroom.

The court further heard that the accused followed the minor
in the bedroom where he raped her once.

The matter came to light when the complainant told her brother aged five that he had been raped by her stepfather.

She waited for her mother to return from work and narrated to her what had happened. The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest.

A medical affidavit that was produced in court revealed that the complainant was infected with HIV.

Tariro Shirichena prosecuted.
