Chibuku Road to fame comes alive

A TOTAL of 13 groups will vie for top honours in the Manicaland provincial finals of the Chibuku Road to Fame competition scheduled for Dangamvura Hotel in Mutare tomorrow.

The group that will win automatically qualifies to represent the province at the national finals of the music talent showcase to be held at Glamis Stadium in Harare on September 17. Delta Beverages, the organisers of the competition, have also introduced an incentive for all the participating groups who will each walk away with US$100 as participation fee.

"We have decided to introduce the participation fee as an incentive to all the groups who are going to take part in the competition since we realised that they put a lot of effort in their preparations for the event.

"What this means is that each and every group that participates will walk away with something," said Patricia Murambinda, Delta Beverages' marketing manager.

The group that will come out tops will get US$500 as well as US$100 participation fee, while the second-placed group will pocket US$300 plus participation fee.

A total of US$300 will go to the group that occupies third position.

"We have received an overwhelming number of groups who are willing to take part in the competition and in Manicaland we now have a total of 13 groups instead of the normal 10 who will be battling it out for honours," Murambinda said.

She urged people in the province to come and support their own saying this was a way of promoting and nurturing talent.

"We are urging people to come and support these up-and-coming groups since we need young artistes to rise to levels reached by the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso," Murambinda said.

Launched in 2001 by the National Arts of Zimbabwe in collaboration with Delta Beverages, the competition seeks to promote young aspiring musicians and assist them to realise their dreams.

The event also gives the young artistes a chance to interact with established musicians as well as assisting them in recording their music.

The gesture aims at promoting the development of original music through the identification of groups who have the potential to produce material worth recording.

Chibuku Road to Fame has seen groups like Club Shanga - Music Crossroads winners - honing their talents and achieving their dream through the music platform that the event offers to upcoming music groups.
