A WELL-known Mutare diamond dealer last Friday ran amok and hacked a rival suitor with a machete before kidnapping his ex-wife.
Herbert Satiya (25) is alleged to have kidnapped his ex-wife from her workplace and drove to a secluded place where he threatened to shoot her.
He appeared before senior Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekesayi Chiundura on Monday facing two separate charges of attempted murder and kidnapping.
He was granted $100 bail on each of the counts.
The case goes for trail on April 2. Mr Farai Matinhure of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners represented Satiya, while Mrs Tinashe Magwagwa prosecuted.
In the attempted murder charge, Mrs Magwagwa told the court that on March 14, the accused went to House Number 11, Oriel Street, Mutare, driving his Toyota Lexus (ADI 1386) armed with a machete.
"While at Gift Mukaronda's house, Satiya had a misunderstanding with Mukaronda, accusing him of having an affair with his ex-wife. The accused took a machete from his vehicle and struck the complainant four times, once on the right shoulder, left lower arm and twice on the left hip," she said.
His ex-wife, Tanyaradzwa Magadzire (21), of House Number 908A, Dangamvura, Mutare, filed kidnapping charges against Satiya after he dragged her from her workplace prior to the machete attack on Mukaronda.
Mrs Magwagwa told the court that the accused unlawfully deprived Magadzire of her freedom by kidnapping her and charged him with unlawful detention as defined in Section 93 (i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
"The complainant is employed as a cashier at Saurombe Nite Shift Eco-cash in Mutare. Accused person and complainant were once married and divorced in January 2013. On the day in question at around 7am, the complainant reported at her workplace. She went behind the shop counter and suddenly the accused person entered the shop and approached her. He grabbed the complainant and dragged her out of the shop demanding to know where she had slept that night. A security guard, Trevor Chawatama, who was manning the premises, tried to restrain the accused, but he was pushed aside.
"He dragged the complainant out of the shop into a taxi which was parked along the road," said Mrs Mugwagwa. Satiya allegedly took the complainant to Meikles Park where he forced her into his car.
"The accused threatened the complainant with serious harm if she tried to escape. He drove to his residence in Florida. He took a machete and a small bag with a pistol from his house and returned to his vehicle and drove to Mukaronda's house.
"He attacked Mukaronda with a machete and produced a pistol and ordered the complainant back into the car. The accused further took the complainant to a secluded place in Penhalonga and threatened to shoot her or hack her with the machete if she did not reveal the truth about her alleged affair with Mukaronda.
"He drove to a place near Forestry Commission Company before taking the complainant to Africa University. He later drove to Mutare and parked at a place near Fairbridge Park.
"Detectives later arrested him in connection with the attempted murder case and his ex-wife, who was still locked in his car, was rescued."
