Robber shoots self dead at a cop shop

Serial armed robber Simba Muchengeti has committed suicide at Shurugwi Police Station.

Muchengeti allegedly committed a spate of armed robberies in Ngundu but was recently apprehended by the police and held in detention awaiting his court appearance.

While national police spokesperson Charity Charamba said she was yet to receive information pertaining to the incident, informed police officers at the Midlands precinct said the robber asked to use the toilet where he reportedly shot himself.

The police officers on duty heard a loud bang which they believed to be a gunshot and rushed to the toilet where they found Muchengeti lying dead. He was said to have smuggled a gun into the holding cells, and decided to take his own life.

Midlands' police spokesperson Ellen Mukwendwe also said she did not immediately have details of the incident.

"I am not aware of that incident but since you have now told me I will have to look into the case and let you know in due course," she said. "It is unfortunate that I have not yet received the report."
