Karoi police reportedly arrested a 43-year-old member of the Johanne Marange Apostolic Sect who had been on the run for three weeks after allegedly killing his wife during a domestic dispute.

Tobias Mavheruka of Mwabvura village under Chief Mujinga, Hurungwe has since appeared before Karoi resident Magistrate Mr Robson Finsin charged with murder.

Mr Finsin advised Mavheruka to apply for bail at the High court before remanding him in custody to April 2.
It is alleged that on March 7, Mavheruka had a misunderstanding with his deceased wife, Esther Muzenda over a boil on their three year-old child.

It is alleged Muzenda was trying to squeeze out the boil from the child's body when Mavheruka ordered her to stop and wait for his elder brother whom he claimed was experienced in handling boil cases.

Muzenda defied his orders, angering Mavheruka, who allegedly picked a hoe and struck his wife three times in the forehead, killing her on the spot.

Immediately after the incident, is it alleged that Mavheruka, went into hiding and would only come back to sleep in his house at night and spend the day in a dense gum-tree plantation close to his homestead. Police and villagers in Tengwe teamed up and besieged his hide-out.

On disembarking from the tree, Mavheruka threatened to attack anyone before fleeing into his house where he quickly downed a 500ml bottle of a poisonous chemical (lambda) intending to commit suicide.  He had to be rushed to Chivende Clinic after being fed with cow dung to induce vomiting.

Mr Benjamin Negato prosecuted.
