President Robert Mugabe has slammed Catholic bishops for continuously criticising him through their misinformed pastoral letters.
Mugabe was speaking at Kutama College in Zvimba where he was Guest of Honour at the official opening of a hostel block.
A staunch Catholic himself, President Mugabe has done a lot to support his church and the general populace of Zimbabwe and was the author of the upgrading of Kutama Mission, his former school and birthplace.
Mugabe told the gathering comprising school children, teachers, government ministers and high ranking officials from government and the business community, that while other churches where he is not a member are grateful and appreciate his contribution to various communities and the country as a whole, his own church, through the Catholic Bishops Pastoral Letter, takes every opportunity to criticise him.
In one of the pastoral letters, the Catholic bishops have called on the President and Zanu PF to fully implement the GPA including the issue of the appointment of RBZ Governor and Attorney-General, where the President made it clear that the two issues were never part of the GPA and that they will never be implemented.
He said by peddling the MDC agenda, the Catholic bishops are dabbling in politics and siding with the MDC which was created by the British to effect regime change in Zimbabwe.
He said Zimbabwean nationalists, including himself, sacrificed their all in the struggle for independence, to ensure the total freedom of the people and not for money, adding that he remains committed and dedicated to preserving that freedom and independence.
Mugabe played a major role in the upgrading of Kutama College through the construction of the Kutama Day School.
He was also the driving force behind the establishment of an A-level classroom block at the school, the construction of a computer laboratory, the upgrading of Father Ohea Hospital and many other projects.
Meanwhile, President Mugabe officially opened a new state of the art hostel at Kutama College in Zvimba this Thursday afternoon. The hostel block which is the brain child of President Mugabe was built by the Kutama Old Boys Association.
Mugabe was accompanied to Kutama College by the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe who has also played her part in the upgrading of the college.
Several government ministers, including Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, Dr Ignatius Chombo, Dr Joseph Made, Dr Douglas Mombeshora, Lazarus Dokora, Walter Chidhakwa, Dr Gideon Gono and DDF boss, James Jonga who played various roles towards the realisation of the project were in attendance.
Mugabe began his speech at the occasion by narrating how after the liberation war, the school was in a dilapidated state and how he and other late former students such as Munangatire and Professor Kahari came up with the idea of forming the Kutama Old Boys Association in the 1980s.
Several programmes and projects were carried out to upgrade the school which is now an envy of many and a source of pride to the Zvimba community.
The President wound up his speech by announcing a donation of an LDC television for the new hostel.
Kutama College was among the beneficiaries of the President's schools computerisation programme which has seen all secondary schools in the country getting computers.
