PRESIDENTIAL Affairs minister Didymus Mutasa, who has been conspicuous by his absence at most State and Zanu-PF functions since the beginning of this year, yesterday confirmed that he was not well, but dismissed speculative reports that he was on his deathbed.

Mutasa, who doubles as Zanu-PF secretary for administration, told NewsDay in a telephone interview that he was not feeling well, but declined to disclose the nature of his sickness or where he was recuperating from.

"I am not feeling well, but is my illness newsworthy? Let's discuss anything you want for now without talking about my illness," he said.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said Mutasa was back in Harare after going for a medical check-up in India and was well and "in a jovial mood".

"He is okay, he went out for a medical check-up, but I spoke to him and he was in a jovial mood," Gumbo said.

Reports about Mutasa's ill health started spreading after he missed President Robert Mugabe's birthday bash in Marondera in February.

Mutasa, who is also the patron of the newly launched Zimbabwe Global Initiative (ZGI) created to "correct the misconception about the country" again failed to attend the project's launch two weeks ago due to ill health.

Recently, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister Emmerson Mnangagwa told Members of Parliament that Mutasa could not answer questions directed to him because he was not well.
