Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) commissioner general Augustine Chihuri's former aide and Zanu PF Marondera East legislator Jeremiah Chiwetu has proposed that lie detector tests be done on prospective government employees to reduce corruption.

"Corruption is rife in the country but as much as we can shout at the top of our voices about corruption, this vice cannot overshadow the brutal and debilitating effects of these sanctions," Chiwetu said in the national assembly.

"Admittedly corruption is now endemic. There is need for this august House to join hands in fighting corruption. It is time, hotlines and various social media are established as instruments designed to expose corruption in all public institutions.

"Since corruption is now a virus within the society, we need an anti virus. The use of lie detectors can also reduce employment and appointment of dishonest public officials. Lie detectors have been used elsewhere to detect officials who lack integrity."

Chiwetu said lie detectors were an effective tool, "and I would like to propose the introduction of their use in this august House if as legislators we are deeply committed in taming this scourge and also demonstrating our integrity.

"If we show the way, it will naturally be easy for us to compel other public officials to follow suit can assure you that through this imperative endeavour, we will be able to weed out the rotten elements from our midst," Chiwetu said.

Chiwetu left the police force where he held the rank of a chief superintendent in the run up to last year's July 31 elections.
