TWO prominent Mutare lawyers, Chris Ndlovu and Rangariyai Mubata, were this week picked up by the police for allegedly doctoring an affidavit in which a Mutare man was implicating a businessman for extorting money from Indian brothers.
The two legal practitioners were detained overnight on Tuesday and are expected to appear in court through summons.
Police confirmed the arrest of Ndlovu and Mubata and said investigations were in progress.
It is alleged that the two connived to write and sign an affidavit purporting that it was Alby Marima of House Number 8, Keates Avenue, Fairbridge, who was implicating businessman Tinotenda Machakaire for masterminding the extortion of $15 000 from Muzafar Khan.
The money was said to be Khan's protection fee and was supposed to be paid to three senior Government officials (names provided).
However, Marima has since distanced himself from the alleged affidavit which was signed before Mubata on March 14.
In another affidavit which was signed before another Mutare lawyer, Ms Memory Mandingwa, on March 18, Marima exonerated Machakaire and implicated Ndlovu and Mubata.
Marima wrote: "On March 14, I was called by one M Khan, commonly known as ‘Good', asking my whereabouts.
"Good told me that he wanted to reduce Tino Machakaire because, according to him, the said Tino Machakaire thought he was a big guy in town. I asked him the reason why he wanted to do that and his explanation was that Tino Machakaire was supporting Charlie Chave hence he could not anymore.
"He asked me to be his witness and support his claim to the effect that the said Tino Machakaire had extorted him some money under the guise that he wanted to give senior Government officials (names withheld) so that they would give protection to Good and his family.
"I told Good that I was going to talk to him later because I wanted to go and pick up one of my kids from school."
