Police have impounded more than 300 unregistered cars in an operation to clamp down on robbery and other crimes committed using unmarked vehicles.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda yesterday said the operation began last week under the code name "No to tobacco middlemen, prostitution and robberies during the tobacco selling season".

"As of Friday we had impounded 315 vehicles without number plates. We launched this operation because we are having problems of hit-and-run accidents as well as robberies and wayward driving by motorists with unmarked vehicles," Insp Chibanda said.

He said the crackdown involved the Police Vehicle Theft Squad and Central Vehicle Registration department.

Insp Chibanda said the impounded vehicles, being held at Milton Park Police Station, would only be released after thorough vetting.

"We also embarked on this operation to reduce cases of farmers losing their hard-earned cash when they get paid after selling their tobacco," he said.
