Harare residents should brace for more water cuts

Harare residents are set to experience severe water cuts as the rehabilitation of Morton Jaffrey Water Works continues.
Harare City Council Town Clerk, Dr Tendai Mahachi said before the rehabilitation, Morton Jaffrey pumped 580 000 mega litres per day, but currently it is pumping only 382 000 mega litres.
Dr Mahachi said they are hoping the situation will ease by September.
"The decommissioning of equipment at Morton Jaffrey has resulted in major supply issues, but the equipment was obsolete and we have no option but to rehabilitate," he said.
While operating on full capacity, Morton Jaffrey Water Works can pump 700 000 mega litres a day.
The plant was last upgraded in 1994 and the obsolete equipment coupled with leakages have seen the 580 000 litres failing to satisfy the city's ever growing demand.
Suburbs such as Mabvuku, Glen Lorne and Greendale have not received water for years, while other areas such as Kuwadzana Extension, Glen View, Budiriro and Glen Norah receive water erratically.
