President Robert Mugabe's spokesman George Charamba has dismissed a report that claims that the head of state is considering handing over the presidency to former Reserve Bank governor, Gideon Gono.

The report claimed that Gono is headed to replace Mugabe a move heralded by many as expedient to save Zanu-PF's waning credibility while protecting Mugabe family interests. But responding to questions on the story, Mr Charamba replied dismissing it saying it was baseless.

"Sounds to me like a stupid report. And to you? Hope not a case of unsurpassed clairvoyance," said Charamba.

Mr Charamba's denial comes after Mugabe signaled for the first time that his immediate successor according to the constitution, Joice Mujuru, was not guaranteed the top post.
